Sugary cereals tax
Published 9/14/2007
All breakfast cereals have been exempt from GST since it was introduced in 2000. Obesity lobby group the Obesity Policy Coalition (OPC) is now calling on the Commonwealth government to place a tax on unhealthy kids' breakfast cereals.
The OPC suggests that because many kids' breakfast cereals are high in sugar they should be taxed just like other sugary foods such as confectionery.
Do you agree that there should be a tax on sugary breakfast cereals? Do you think this would help to send the message that these cereals are only occasional treats?

No the sugar producers of Australia provide the sugar for these and many other sweet products, sugar is addictive, and they know it. the government should introduce legislation to limit the amount of sugar in all products marketed to children.

Yes, I think a tax on sugary cereals would be a good start. Legislation changes to stop misleading information on packs would be a better long term solution though.

Yes if its possible.I like the idea of nutririonist Rosemary Stanton that we all have ration cards for junkfood and you can save them up for a special occasion or bake your own sweets if you run out, I'm not a fan of govt control but I sure do need someone to help me out with my sweet tooth lol, I don't think its really possible to do this but with diabetes being so prevalent in kids nowadays we need to do something hey?

I agree with John Phillips, it is only giving the government more money and making supermarkets raise their prices. Just cos we got money doesn't mean were gonna spend it all at once. so i say no.
