What we say
AJITAS Vege Chips are 50% cassava (a potato-like root vegetable) with tapioca flour, sunflower oil and sesame seeds as the next major ingredients. Their 6% vegetable content is a mix of Chinese cabbage, garlic and shallot leaves.
Unlike other chips ARNOTT'S Thins, for example –– AJITAS Vege Chips get an orange rather than a red light for fat, so live up to their on-pack claim of '40% less fat than most potato chips'. But they've got added sugar (presumably to make up for the loss of flavour-promoting fat) and get a red light for sodium –– just one 21g pack provides 10 to15% (depending on the flavour) of the upper level of daily sodium intake that's acceptable for an eight-year-old. So they're still not exactly a health food.
There's nothing wrong with a packet of chips as an occasional treat, but even though these can be found in the supermarket's health food aisle, there are many healthier options to include in kids' lunchboxes.
