What we say
ARNOTT'S Thins 'Smart Serve' chips have 'Less than 100 calories per pack' blazed across the multi-pack exterior. You'd be forgiven for thinking this is a lower-fat chip that's healthier for your kids. In fact they're just the usual high-fat chips packaged in a small bag, which apparently transforms them into the perfect snack for kids.
OK, life's too short not to enjoy a bag of chips now and then, but don't let clever marketing tactics like this convince you that unhealthy foods should be a regular inclusion in a balanced diet.
ARNOTT'S also includes a reference to the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, presumably to jusitfy regularly including chips in a child's diet: 'Nutritionists say 100 calories is a sensible-sized treat'. True, but everyday snacks should mostly include fruit, bread and cereals, vegetable sticks, cheese and yoghurt - food that kids will also get valuable nutrients from.
There's nothing wrong with a packet of chips as an occasional treat, but there are many healthier options to include in kids' lunchboxes.
