What we say
BEGA Stringers are individually wrapped cheese sticks that pull apart into 'strings' of cheese. Cheese by nature is a high-fat, high-salt product, so it's not surprising that Stringers get a red light for these two nutrients. But they make an OK occasional snack, particularly as each stick isn't very big (just 20g). As claimed on the label, they have '37% less fat than cheddar cheese' and they are a 'source of calcium' (each stick provides 18% of daily calcium needs). They're also less salty than some cheese products popular with kids - KRAFT Singles or KRAFT Cheestiks, for example (see our reviews, below).
Stringers are a fun way for kids to eat cheese. But if your child is a cheese-aholic, you might want to favour reduced-fat options that are also reduced salt. And remember, there are other good sources of calcium with much less salt and fat than cheese - low-fat yogurt or low-fat milk, for example.
Additives listed: none.
