What we say
Fish is an excellent source of protein. It contains essential vitamins (particularly A and D) and minerals (such as iodine). It's generally a healthier alternative to meat (it's low in saturated fat) and most of us should be eating more of it - two or three fish meals a week - according to the Australian Dietary Guidelines.
BIRDS EYE Fish Fingers might be 'made with 100% fish fillets', but they're actually only 56% fish (water and the breadcrumb coating make up the remainder). That aside, they make a pretty good quick and easy meal option, particularly if teamed up with salad or vegies. SEAWAYS Golden Sea Creatures, by way of comparison, are only 31% fish, although they do include added vegies.
We've all heard about the health benefits of eating fish, particularly fish with the healthy omega-3 fats. But BIRDS EYE Fish Fingers, like many frozen fish products, are made with white fish like hake and hoki. Hake and hoki are low in total fat but unfortunately they're also low in omega-3 fats.
For more information see the CHOICE article on frozen fish products.
