What we say
GATORADE for Active Under 13s is a drink range formulated specifically for active 'tweens' aged 9 to 12 years. According to the manufacturer, it contains less sugar than most carbonated soft drinks, cordials and fruit juices, it's low in sodium and its 200mL portion control pack is 'ideal for kids'. A fact file released by GATORADE discusses the problems relating to dehydration in active and sporty children, and emphasises the need for them to replenish electrolytes and mineral salts - which, perhaps not coincidentally, GATORADE for Active Under 13s provides.
According to the Australian Institute of Sport, electrolyte replacement is most important if an exercise session is prolonged and intense - such as when kids are involved in serious sports training, not just cricket on the beach or a school football game.
Active children should definitely be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated. But unless your offspring is a fledgling elite athlete, special sports drinks for kids are unnecessary - drinking plenty of water willl keep them hydrated.
