What we say
Tinned spaghetti has always been considered the poor cousin of baked beans in terms of nutrition (see our review of HEINZ Baked Beans). With this product, HEINZ was out to improve one of tinned spaghetti's nutritional deficits by adding fibre in the form of inulin. It now contains 50% more fibre than regular spaghetti, but its fibre content is still less than half that of baked beans.
Inulin counts as 'dietary fibre' under the Food Standards Code, but in fact it's nothing like the fibre in wheat bran, oats or baked beans. Although inulin acts like soluble fibre in some respects, as yet there's no clear evidence that it's good for the heart or has a role in the prevention of bowel cancer.
That said, if it's a quick, low-fat meal that you're after, then HEINZ Spaghetti - teamed with a slice or two of wholemeal toast - is still a reasonable option.
