What we say
HOPPER Hip Hop Fruit & Cereal Bars contain 'No junk' - by this they mean no preservatives, no artificial colours, no artificial flavours and no added sugar. Curiously, rice flour and vegetable oil help make up the '40% real fruit' along with dates, sultanas and pear paste, according to the ingredients list. The cereal they contain is rolled oats.
The benefit of having the oats is that they boost the fibre content and give the bars a crumbly texture, so they're less likely to stick to teeth (a common problem with many dried fruit bars). But the bars also have vegetable oil and vegetable shortening added, which contributes to the fat content. And while it's all from fruit, the bars are over 40% sugar.
The individually wrapped portions are convenient as a portable snack or for your child's lunchbox. But make sure fresh fruit and plain oats stay on the menu.
