What we say
LCMs bring the humble rice crackle from occasional party favourite to everyday lunchbox item. The pack indicates that 'LCMs make every lunchbox fun with lots of varieties to choose from, there's a different flavour for every day of the week'. They also promote the taste as being ‘the goodness of rice combined with yummy ingredients that kids love'.
A quick look at the ingredients list and it seems that these 'yummy ingredients' are pretty much all sugars. After rice bubbles (which have sugar as their second ingredient) the sugar ingredients in descending order of weight are glucose syrup, fructose, sugar (again), glucose solids, and invert sugar. Yes, pretty much rice and sugar with a bit of hydrogenated oil and salt added to round them off.
LCMs shouldn't be an everyday lunch box item. A small snack as part of a party spread, sure, but that’s where they should remain.
Additives listed: glycerol (422), emulsifier (472e, 471).
