What we say
KRAFT Smooth Peanut Butter might be a favourite kids' spread but it's more than 50% fat, is high in saturated fats and high in sodium (or salt). The good news is that around half the fat in peanut butter comes from healthy monounsaturated fats which won't raise cholesterol levels like saturated fats.
Because of its high salt content, KRAFT Smooth Peanut Butter is not something that kids should have too much of. A 20g tablespoon of KRAFT Smooth Peanut Butter has around 9% of the amount of sodium that an 8-year-old should reasonably consume in one day. But peanut butter is usually eaten on bread which also contains a moderate amount of salt. So a sandwich made with KRAFT Smooth Peanut Butter and white bread (and butter or margarine) would provide nearly 30% of an 8-year-old's recommended maximum intake of sodium for one day.
If your kids love peanut butter everyday you should probably look for one of the reduced fat and lower salt varieties of peanut butter. And try to spread it on its own, not on top of butter or margarine.
