What we say
NESTLE Cheerios is one of many cereals that's marketed on the basis of its whole grain content. 'The goodness of 4 whole grains', declares the pack. 'Wholegrain' means it's minimally processed so contains more of the natural constituents found in the grain than if it was refined. Whole grains are rich in protective antioxidants and minerals, and there's now good evidence that wholegrain cereals protect you against heart disease and some cancers.
Cheerios is a combination of whole grain corn oats, barley, wheat and rice and contains a moderate 6.6% fibre, but it's sugary and reasonably salty. As a breakfast cereal for kids you could do a lot worse, but you could also do better (see SANITARIUM Weet-Bix Kids, for example).
Additives listed: Caramel III (150c), Annatto extracts (160b).
