What we say
'Whole grain' is the latest catch-phrase in breakfast cereals. Whole grain foods are usually minimally processed and contain more of the natural constituents found in the grain than refined foods. These include vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals (these may provide protection against some cancers and heart disease). Use the ingredients list rather than front of pack claims to separate marketing hype from fact - if the first ingredient listed is whole grain then it's more likely to include these nutrients. And the greater the percentage, the better.
SANITARIUM Weet-Bix Fruity - Wild Berry is 71% whole grain wheat. It's a good source of dietary fibre and while it's quite sugary, some of this is from the fruit pieces (mainly fruit concentrate), which makes up 16% of the cereal. And it's bite-sized pieces are likely to appeal to kids. There may be better cereals out there, but we'd have to agree with the latest ads - in the struggle to find a cereal that kids will eat, but that's healthy, it's a good compromise.
Additives listed: Glycerol (422), Acidity regulators (270, 332), Pectin (440), Calcium carbonate (170).
