What we say
'Low GI...for sustained energy!' is the claim on the packet of TIP TOP UP EnerGI bread, and, in smaller print 'low GI foods throughout the day help you to maintain concentration', 'low GI foods help manage blood glucose levels', 'low GI foods have a slow energy release and give an increased feeling of fullness' and 'low GI foods help maintain a healthy heart'.
Certainly if you have diabetes or pre-diabetes there’s growing evidence that you should be considering GI as a factor in making healthy food choices. But for generally healthy people research hasn’t yet shown significant health benefits. If you’re concerned about GI, however, you might just as well give your kids ordinary multigrain bread — if they'll eat it. It has a lower GI than UP EnerGI bread, plus they'll get the benefits of whole grain (there’s very good evidence that eating whole grains in bread and cereals helps protect you against heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some forms of cancer).
Additives listed: Guar gum (412), Emulsifiers (481, 472e).
